In honor of Men’s Health Month, it is important to recognize the threat that gum disease poses to the general population. It is believed that most Americans suffer from some form of gum disease, but statistics show that men are disproportionately affected by this condition. Regardless of your gender, if you have gum disease in Rockville, MD, the following information can help you learn more about the condition and its impact on your overall health.

The Stages of Gum Disease

Brushing on a regular basis is the best way to defend against gum disease, but if plaque continues to accumulate, the chances of a patient developing gum disease will significantly increase. There are three distinct stages of gum disease.

  • Gingivitis is the earliest stage, and it begins with the inflammation of gum tissue. This inflammation is largely caused by plaque accumulation, and patients with gingivitis often report bleeding during flossing or brushing. Gingivitis is reversible.
  • Periodontitis is the second, irreversible stage of gum disease. During periodontitis, the fibers and bone that hold the teeth in place become damaged. This damage allows plaque to penetrate below the gum line and further damage tissue and supporting bone.
  • Advanced periodontitis is the final and most severe stage of gum disease. In this stage, the teeth and gums are so damaged that more than likely, a periodontist will begin to recommend restorative treatments. They may also have to remove teeth that have been damaged beyond repair.

If you are suffering from advanced gum disease, your doctor may recommend scaling and root planning. This treatment involves your periodontist using a scaling device to eliminate plaque below the gum line. Lasers are often used to remove plaque deposits during treatment.
