There are numerous symptoms that necessitate gum disease treatment. They include swollen gum tissue, bleeding while brushing, receding gum line, bad breath (also known as halitosis), pus forming around teeth, and loosening teeth. Do not hesitate to see our periodontist, and make sure you take these preventative steps at home.
1. Practice Proper Brushing Techniques
You should brush your teeth twice a day for two to three minutes each time. Brush at the gum line where plaque is most likely to get caught. You should change your toothbrush every few months, when the bristles begin to wither, to prevent germs and bacteria from accumulating on it.
2. Floss Daily
You should floss between your teeth at least once a day. Food particles get caught between teeth near the gum line. Your brush may not be able to reach these narrow spots. Many floss picks also come with a gum stimulator to massage the gum tissue.
3. Eat Plenty of Vitamin C and D
Vitamins C and D are crucial for good oral health. Strawberries, broccoli, and tomatoes are excellent sources of vitamin C while cheese and eggs are great for vitamin D. Vitamin D even works as an anti-inflammatory agent to reduce bleeding in the gums.
4. Use Mouthwash
When selecting a mouthwash, you want to make sure you choose one that actively fights plaque rather than one that just whitens or fights bad breath.
5. Cut Back on Staining or Sugary Habits
Smoking or chewing tobacco can stain your teeth, as well as coffee. Alcohol with content high in sugar can increase plaque buildup. After practicing such habits, make sure to brush your teeth shortly after to protect your teeth from staining and bacteria. Moderation, followed by a proper oral health regimen, is key.
