If you have periodontal disease, you may begin to experience one of its most obvious manifestations: receding gums. Gum recession occurs when the gum line lowers down the root of the tooth, and in addition to detracting from the aesthetic appeal of your smile, receding gums can cause root sensitivity, root exposure, cavities, and inflammation of tissues. To treat unsightly receding gums, Dr. Steven Rice offers a gum grafting procedure to his patients in Rockville, MD that employs a minimally invasive Advanced Oral Plastic Surgical technique.

After gum grafting in Rockville, MD

Unlike other gum grafting procedures, which obtain donor gum tissue from the roof of the patient’s mouth and can be quite painful, Dr. Rice uses the Alloderm® Regenerative Tissue Matrix to repair receding gums. Comprised of donated human skin, Alloderm® is an acellular dermal matrix that undergoes a patented multi-step process to remove the epidermis and cells that can cause tissue rejection. In addition to burn victims, this method has been safely used in general, urological, orthopedic, and dental surgeries for over a decade. Clinical studies show virtually no variance in results when using the Alloderm® as opposed to the patient’s own tissue.

Dr. Rice uses the Alloderm® technique, because it provides excellent results and a more comfortable patient experience. Moreover, this process is much more efficient than palatal surgery; Dr. Rice can treat as many as 20 teeth in just two visits! Repairing the same amount of teeth using palatal donor tissue would require eight to 10 surgeries.
